Lake Ocquittunk Family / Group Camping Area, Stokes State Forest

General Driving Considerations: Since Stokes State Forest is located in extreme northwest NJ, very close to the NJ-NY-PA tri-state border, and is directly accessible only via NJ-15 / US-206 as the major throughway in that geographical area, it is highly recommended that drivers originating from New Brunswick, Somerville, Flemington, Clinton, Morristown, as well as various locations close to New York City, should consider taking northbound I-287 and/or westbound I-80 to NJ-15 (North). From that point on it is an approximately 26.5 mile, “straight line” drive on NJ-15/US-206 to the park entrance at Flatbrook Road.

From the I-78 / I-287 Interchange near Bridgewater, NJ [60 miles in approximately 1 hour 17 minutes]:

State Line Lookout – Palisades Interstate Park
(GPS coordinates: 40.988358, -73.907208)

General Driving Directions:
Palisades Interstate Park is situated in the northeast corner of Bergen County. It’s a long and very narrow 2,500-acre parcel of land sandwiched between the Hudson River on the east side and the Palisades Parkway on the west side. State Line Lookout parking lot, the location of our meet, is about 1/2 mile away from the NJ-NY state line – hence the name. State Line Lookout can be reached by car only via the Palisades Parkway. It has its own, unnumbered exit about 2 miles north of Exit 2, accessible directly from the northbound lanes of the Parkway and via a median U-turn from the Parkway southbound lanes (just south of Exit 3).

FROM THE SOUTH

Via the NJ Turnpike: Follow the northbound local lanes of the Turnpike and then take the US-46 Exit. Stay in the right lane of the exit ramp, merge onto US-46 East and follow it for 2.5 miles. Take the US-9W/Fort Lee/Palisades Parkway Exit and proceed for 0.2 miles to a traffic light. Turn left onto Fletcher Avenue and follow it for approximately 0.6 mile. Take ramp on right to merge onto the northbound Palisades Parkway. Follow the Parkway for 8.9 miles. Take the exit toward State Line Lookout and drive 0.7 mile to the parking lot.

FROM THE WEST

Via Interstate 80 and the NJ Turnpike:
Follow the eastbound local lanes of I-80. Continue straight to merge onto the local lanes of the northbound Turnpike and then follow it for 2.4 miles. Take Exit 72 via the 2nd lane from the left and continue for 0.4 miles to a traffic light.

FROM THE NORTH

Via Interstate 287 / Interstate 87:
Use this longer back-up route when approaching State Line Lookout from the south becomes impractical or impossible. Take whatever means necessary to get to I-287-East/I-87-South (traveling toward the Tappan Zee Bridge). From there, take Exit 13S, merge onto the southbound Palisades Parkway and follow it for 9.6 miles. Use the left lane to make a clearly marked U-turn across the median onto the northbound Palisades Parkway (Note: the U-turn ramp is 0.4 miles past Exit 3). Follow the northbound Parkway for 0.3 miles and then take the exit toward State Line Lookout. Continue on the ramp/driveway for 0.7 mile to the parking lot..

FROM NEW YORK CITY

Take whatever means necessary to get to the George Washington Bridge. Cross the bridge and then immediately take Exit 74 toward the Palisades Parkway. Drive north 9.5 miles on the Parkway. Take the exit toward State Line Lookout and continue for 0.7 mile to the parking lot.

DEPARTING FROM STATE LINE LOOKOUT

Be aware that the driveway leading away from the parking lot will take you back only to the northbound Palisades Parkway. After merging onto the Parkway, travel approximately 0.2 miles to the clearly marked U-turn ramp on left.
